Why is this free?

Many people may wonder why this project began and why we would give our software source code away.

There are two main reasons we decided to open source this project. The first reason is that we truly believe in open source as a way of life. Some of the best pieces of software we have ever used were developed entirely open source. Also, open source communities, in general, are incredibly helpful and dedicated. That brings us to our second reason, community. Our hope is that a community will develop around this project and a core team develops. We do not want to be the sole bearer of this project indefinitely. We want others to join in and together we can continue to create a better product. You might ask why would someone contribute their time to a project like this for free? For the answer, loop back to the beginning of this paragraph.

This may bring up another question. Why are there services that are not free mentioned on this site? Some of the services developed for this project are quite advanced and consume resources that cost money in the real world. Yes, the hosting for this site does cost money too. However, it is small in comparison to the resources needed for these advanced features if any decent number of users began to use them. It is quite possible that the advanced features will be free for some set period of time. That is yet to be determined.

The bottom line is that if this project is successful there will be a community of developers both hardware and software working together to better the lives others. Ultimately that is the reason we have decided to share our work with others completely free of charge.
